Surveying has transformed dramatically, advancing from the use of trigonometry to sophisticated GPS technology. Initially, surveyors relied on trigonometric methods, using metal chains, compasses, and levels to measure distances and angles. This process, while effective, was labour-intensive and time-consuming, requiring meticulous calculations and manual effort.

The introduction of theodolites and total stations marked a significant improvement. These tools combined electronic distance measurement with angle measurement, enhancing accuracy and efficiency. However, the advent of GPS technology revolutionized the field.

GPS employs a network of satellites to deliver precise, real-time location data. Surveyors with GPS receivers can determine positions within centimetres, drastically cutting down the time and effort required for fieldwork. This advancement allows for rapid data collection over extensive areas, even in challenging terrains.

The progression from trigonometry to GPS underscores the critical role of technological advancements in improving the precision, efficiency, and scope of surveying techniques.
