Winter Earthworks Consents

20 March 2025

AUTHOR:Ben Frank

Summer is officially over, yet the warmer and sunny days are still with us. As we commence into Autumn, we are also nearing the completion of the Earthworks season for 2024/2025. In most regions, the earthworks season runs from approximately September/October to April of each calendar year.

Territorial Authorities impose earthworks season over the summer months as this is predominantly when we experience favorable conditions for changes to the landform. Earthworks associated with land development offer require resource consent from local or regional councils to ensure the work does not have a negative effect on the environment.

Any earthworks that require Resource Consent, needs to be assessed on its own merit and how any effects will be mitigated, even more so in the winter months.

As we all know, winter brings much more wet weather and as such the rain can make it hard to undertake earthmoving and managing unfavorable run off from earthworks sites.

Winter Works consent is required for Earthworks which are proposed to be undertaken outside of the indicated season. The team at Birch are happy to help obtain this consent and ensure that projects can continue and be managed effectively throughout the winter period.
